Our local celebrity Elsa Brehm Hoffmann of Hillsboro Beach, FL, age 102 (see more on Elsa, including info. about the “Elsa book” on ElsasOwnBlueZone.com), attends a birthday celebration in Pompano for her dear friend Dottie Jones of Coral Springs (center) who recently turned 100. Dottie’s friend Gladys Carls of Knox Village (right) is also 100. These lovely women know and practice one of the big longevity secrets: Stay social and enjoy life.
This open house reception was hosted by Mary Anne and Richard Kull at their beautiful home overlooking the waterway in Pompano Beach, FL. Over 100 people were in attendance.
First Presbyterian Church, Pompano, choir member/sololist Brian Ricci (in blue and black) beautifully sang Dottie’s favorite song “Danny Boy.”
Everyone in the photos is affiliated with or a member of the same church, First Presbyterian, Pompano. Elsa’s daughter Joan was also in attendance.
Elsa was interviewed by Barbara Walters in 2008 for a longevity special and locally she was honored as The Grand Dame of the Pompano Holiday Boat Parade; most recently, Elsa is featured in the February edition of US News and World Report magazine and on their website in the health section.
The book about Elsa, Elsa’s Own Blue Zone, is available online through Amazon, B&N, and elsewhere, through quick orders at bookstores, and locally stocked at My Own Cruising Journal, Lighthouse Point and The Shower Door Store Showroom, Pompano. Elsa Scheduled for US News & World Report
Yes, you read it right! US News & World Report has interviewed, photographed, and videotaped Elsa for her to be included for online and magazine articles. Something is expected online on their website (in late January) as well as in the February magazine issue of US News and World Report. Photographer Charlie Archambault, who has photographed every president since 1991, spent a day with Elsa taking photos and video at her beautiful home as well as with friends playing cards at Deerfield Country Club.

Longevity Presentations Available
Elsa and Author Sharon would be happy to consider giving a presentation to your club or group about Elsa’s longevity and happy living tips. Please direct any inquiries to stextorblack@yahoo.com for additional information on the schedule availability for your area, format options and fees for various types of events. Local booksignings attended by the author and Elsa include a brief introduction about the book and Elsa. These are done at no charge as schedules permit.
Where to Get the Book
People often ask where the best/easiest places are to get the book. As a book by a new author in a down economy where bookstores are cutting back inventories, you can’t find it everywhere in stock (although most bookstores can get it in a day or two). Nevertheless, most find online ordering the easiest. Elsa’s Own Blue Zone brings up pages of online sellers to choose from, with Amazon & Barnes and Noble the biggest sellers for this book. In addition, there are a few places that carry it in Elsa’s hometown area and the author’s original hometown area. They are:
My Own Cruising Journal Store, Beacon Light Plaza, Lighthouse Point, FL See mocj.com for location, ph info.
The Shower Door Store (author’s business), Pompano Beach 954-785-1366
In northern New Jersey:
Baker’s Pharmacy, Sussex, NJ
Annie’s Book Store, Sussex, NJ
For multiple order copies (5 minimum) that you would like personally signed by Elsa and the author, please email stextorblack@yahoo.com (put “EOBZ” in the subject line) for information.
Happy shopping!
Note from Mass Mutual/DBS Financial
Hi Sharon:
As the Marketing Director for MassMutual/DBS Financial Group it was a pleasure meeting Elsa and your mom Joan on December 8th at our client/guest appreciation event. Our guest speaker, Kelly Ferrin a gerontologist from California had an opportunity to speak with Elsa and Joan prior to our event. Elsa is a living example of how to live long and well. We were very pleased to have such great attendance as I have worked on this project for over 3 months. Robin finding Elsa and your family was the icing on the cake. I recently purchased your book and look forward to reading it over the holidays.
I have a very nice photo taken from Robin Fulling’s camera. Please let me know what email to send it to.
Best Regards,
Sherri Hoffenberg
December News
Elsa has been all over this month, from holiday parties to watching great-grandchildren sing carols at their school last evening. Last week she was a special guest of Mass Mutual Financial Services for a presentation on longevity. Thank you to Sherri Hoffenberg for planning such an interesting and lovely evening for nearly 200 associates, special guests and clients. Thanks to Robin Fulling for finding Elsa to include her in this event.
The most recent photo in the paper was with Elsa at a Hillsboro Women’s League Event (Observer). Tomorrow a well-known photographer who has covered every president since 1991 is going to photograph Elsa! We’re very excited. It’s all under wraps for now, but I will be sure to make the announcement here when details can be given. (Hint: a major magazine is scheduled to put in an article including Elsa this coming February, with a preview online late January!).
Elsa has many Christmas plans and get-togethers with friends and local family this month. Daily she works on mailing out her Christmas cards to her huge list of friends and family members … a task she thoroughly enjoys.
Fall Cruise a Blast!

Elsa in Colombia
Elsa and daughter Joan recently cruised from Ft. Lauderdale to many destinations over 10 days, including Panama and Colombia with their friends from Deerfield Country Club. Dancing, playing cards, touring, and meeting new friends everywhere were highlights of the trip. Elsa sang with the entertainment and posed with hardcore Colombian soldiers. People from many cultures were in awe of Elsa’s pep and love of life at 102. No one doubted the trip would be full of fun!
Celebrations Section in Society Pages
We couldn’t let Elsa’s 102nd birthday pass without putting a special announcement in The Sun Sentinel of southeastern Florida. It was seen in the Society section under “Celebrations!” in both Broward and Palm Beach County editions yesterday. The link is below. The photo descriptions are not in the link. They are: 1) Elsa with Pompano Mayor Lamar Fisher and dear friend Caroline Rogow of Hillsboro Beach, FL during a Pompano Chamber Business Expo. ; Elsa was signing books. 2) Elsa on one of her bi-yearly cruises celebrating her birthday with friends and daughter Joan.
The announcement is now up online and you can view it following this link for 60 days:
